WHEN:

8 am – 2 pm

Did you know that buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in NYC? Reducing our energy use = climate action!

Join the NYCPS Office of Energy and Sustainability and Solar One for a day of standards-aligned, hands-on activities. Explore ways to take climate action by reducing carbon emissions in schools and at home.

You’ll leave with a curriculum access as well as a supply list to bring climate action to life in your classroom. You will also be eligible for a free one-day classroom residency (Valued at $1,1017). Teachers will also receive up to 5 hours of CTLE credit for attending.

Hands-On Activities:

  • Energy Transfers – Learn about how energy transfers with this hands-on activity.
  • Power Plant Hook-up Game – Peek inside of a powerplant to learn how we turn fossil fuels into energy and what we can do to replace it.
  • Watt Game – To gain a deeper understanding of how much electricity we use each day, students play a card game where they match commonly used appliances to their average Wattage. They will learn to differentiate between Watts and Watt Hours and will explore the concept of “phantom load.”
  • Light Bulb Lab – During this activity, students compare different light bulbs to calculate the efficacy of each type. Students collect data such as color temperature, Lumens, Wattage, lifespan, and price to assess which light bulbs are most environmentally friendly and cost effective.
  • Energy Audit – Learn about the energy usage of devices in your classroom.
  • Sustainable Materials Mix & Match – Learn about the materials we can use for our environment.

Please note: If you have participated in our other Energy Efficiency PLs sessions, you are welcome to attend again, but content may be the same.
