Solar One has partnered with the NYC Accelerator program and NYSERDA to launch a grant program to promote clean energy in Northern Manhattan, Central Brooklyn and the South Bronx. The grants, which range from $10,000-25,000 each, will support clean energy upgrades for affordable housing properties and outreach campaigns to promote NYC Accelerator’s free clean energy advisory services. Eligible applicants for project-based grants include HDFC co-ops and nonprofit affordable housing properties. Eligible applications for campaign grants include community-based organizations that serve one of the three priority neighborhoods. Clean Energy Grants

Proposal Due Date: April 21, 2023 

Affordable housing properties located in Northern Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, and the South Bronx are eligible to apply for funding to help pay for clean energy upgrades.  

Eligible Applicants

  • Nonprofit and owner-occupied affordable multifamily properties with 5 or more units that are less than 25,000 sq ft. Applicants must own the property under consideration for a grant or have the property owner submit the application. Income-restricted co-ops and condos are eligible and encouraged to apply.
  • Eligible property must be located in Upper Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, or South Bronx. 

Goals

  • Support building owners located in Upper Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, and the South Bronx by providing technical assistance and financial support for the adoption of clean energy retrofits
  • Create case studies that demonstrate the benefits of building energy efficiency in smaller multi-family buildings
  • Increase awareness of the use of clean energy within the community

Eligible Projects

  • Projects must be implemented on a property in the following community districts: Manhattan 9, 10,11,12; Brooklyn 3,4 5,8,9,16,17; Bronx 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9 and eligible projects include

      • Conversion to cleaner fuels

      • Air-sealing
      • Window upgrades

      • High-efficiency PTACs or window AC units
    • Decarbonization studies
    • Distributed generation
      • Solar thermal
    • Domestic hot water
      • Pipe insulation
      • Higher efficiency hot water systems (tankless, heat pump, etc.)
      • Low flow fixtures and showerheads
    • Elevator systems
      • Upgrade elevators, incl. efficiency improvements
    • Heat pumps
      • Mini-splits, PTACs, VRF systems
    • Heating distribution system
      • 1-pipe/2-pipe steam/hydronic/PTAC heating distribution system optimization

Funding Specifics

  • This program seeks to award three to five Clean Energy grants of up to $25,000

Grant Program Requirements

  • The grant will be paid to the awardees following the execution of a grant agreement between the awardee and Solar One and following the execution of a contract between the awardee and a NYSERDA participating contractor for an Eligible Project. Grant funding can be used to pay for project costs not covered by other grants and/or utility/state incentives. 
  • Evidence of substantial progress must be submitted within six months of project approval.
  • Awardees must cooperate with the NYC Accelerator program staff to provide verification of energy savings from the project.  
  • Any changes to the clean energy project scope must be approved by Solar One and the NYC Accelerator team.

Community Campaign Grants

Proposal Due Date: April 14, 2023 

The City of New York has partnered with Solar One to develop a grant program using funding from the NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities Program (CECP). Under the grant program, community based organizations (CBOs) located in high needs communities in Upper Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, and the South Bronx are eligible to apply for funding to support their clean energy campaigns.

CBOs in Northern Manhattan, Central Brooklyn, and the South Bronx.

Funding Specifics

  • This program seeks to award three $10,000-$15,000 Community Campaign grants
  • Submitting an application does not guarantee funding 

Program Description

    This program seeks to fund CBOs that have the capacity and expertise to promote the NYC Accelerator program among building owners and decision-makers. The funded CBOs will be required to: 
  • Co-host one virtual or in-person workshop with NYC Accelerator
  • Post about the NYC Accelerator program six times in a three month period on a social media channel. Examples may include:
  • Newsletter or email blast
  • Instagram 
  • Facebook
  • Provide a testimonial or participate in a brief interview about the importance of energy efficiency and/or healthy buildings to promote the NYC Accelerator program
  • Make a good faith effort to connect a minimum of 15 building owners to the NYC Accelerator Program

Grant Program Requirements

  • The grant will be paid to the awardees following the execution of a grant agreement between the awardee and Solar One.
  • Awardees must work cooperatively with the NYC Accelerator program staff to co-host an event and run a campaign to promote the NYC Accelerator program within six months of award.
