Community event at Stuyvesant Cove Park highlights climate resilience, renewable energy, environmental education, and the future of urban sustainability
NEW YORK, NY — This Independence Weekend, Solar One is inviting New Yorkers to celebrate a new vision of independence—one rooted in clean energy, resilient communities, environmental stewardship, and local action.
On July 3, Solar One will transform Stuyvesant Cove Park into an interactive waterfront festival featuring food trucks, drinks, a live DJ, hands-on STEM activities for kids, environmental education experiences, guided native plant park tours, community storytelling, and demonstrations of sustainable technologies that are helping shape New York City’s future.
For more than two decades, Solar One has empowered New Yorkers through environmental education, green workforce development, solar technical assistance, and community-based sustainability initiatives. This special event will bring this work to life and highlight how communities can build a more resilient future through renewable energy, ecological restoration, and innovative approaches to urban living.
Solar One believes that true independence includes energy independence—the ability for communities to generate clean power, strengthen local infrastructure, create green jobs, education, and training opportunities, and build systems that support long-term environmental and economic well-being.
“Independence has always been about investing in a better future, for every individual and the community overall,” said Solar One’s CEO and former NYC councilmember, Stephen Levin. “Today, that means creating communities that can thrive through clean energy, climate resilience, environmental justice, and shared stewardship of our green spaces.”
The celebration takes place at Stuyvesant Cove Park, New York City’s first native plant park and a living example of how ecological restoration can improve urban environments. Managed by Solar One, the park demonstrates how thoughtfully designed green spaces can support biodiversity, improve waterfront resilience, and connect residents to nature in the heart of the city.
Visitors will experience:
• Food trucks, drinks, DJ, and interactive STEM and sustainability activities
• Guided tours of New York City’s first native plant park
• Climate resilience and environmental education programming
• Community storytelling and engagement activities
• Family-friendly experiences exploring sustainability and native plants
• Indoor waterfront Solar Star Donor Zone with complimentary drinks, snacks, seating, and music
• Waterfront viewing opportunities during the city’s Independence Weekend celebrations
A unique feature of the day will be the sight of historic tall ships passing along the East River as part of the broader Sail250 commemoration. Against the backdrop of Solar One’s solar-powered campus and New York City’s evolving environmentally resilient landscape, the moment offers a striking reflection on the nation’s journey from its past toward a more sustainable future.
The event is free and open to all New Yorkers with registration. If attendees would like to support nonprofit Solar One as a donor, registrations for the Solar Star Donor Zone are open (including complimentary drinks and snacks) and include first access to the nonprofit’s new membership and perks.
