On September 9th, Solar One will be celebrating the Grand Opening of its new Environmental Education Center, nestled in the oasis that is native-plants park, Stuy Cove Park, located on 23rd Street and the East River. The waterfront building will be the new epicenter for future-ready sustainability programming and resiliency projects, and the first ever ground-up solar and battery-storage location in NYC.

The Center will be the permanent home to one of Solar One’s priority programs called Green Design Lab (GDL), the K-12 STEM education initiative, focusing on providing cost-free lessons and hands-on activities for public school students, covering climate, energy, water conservation, battery storage, green technology, sustainable urban design, etc.

The Grand Opening celebration focused on our community, “People-Power for the Planet” will start at 6:30PM. It will be a joyful outdoor event with neighbors, supporters, CBOs, and more. Join us for an enjoyable evening of music, local connection, shared vision, and environmental pride.

About Solar One

From the opening of Stuy Cove Park in 2004, managed by Solar One, to overcoming the devastating setbacks of Superstorm Sandy, our community voiced a powerful support for a space dedicated to sustainability, native plants, and environmental education for students and residents to engage in bettering our ecosystem. S1 was formed as the organization that would achieve these goals. Today, it is a non-profit servicing NYC residents through:

  • Green Design Lab, K-12 STEM education and teacher development
  • Green Workforce, sustainability-focused workforce training
  • Here Comes Solar, solar installation technical assistance
  • Stuyvesant Cove Park and Environmental Education Center, eco-park stewardship and outdoor community space
