We all know that tenants are special: we make our homes in places that don’t belong to us, but that does not mean that our apartments are any less of a home. And our homes deserve to be safe, clean, and green, but it shouldn’t cost us more than our rent.
We tenants are faced with a unique problem of not being able to make all the choices that would make our dwellings green. The refrigerators typically belong to the landlord, even though we pay the electric bill. Heat, on the other hand, is often included in the rent, but at the same time we can’t call up the landlord and tell him to stop using the dirty #6 oil to heat the building. So what do we do?

Turns out that there’re plenty of options and opportunities available to tenants in New York City. And the best part is, as we start adopting them, more will appear. Skeptical? Just look at how many new green cleaning products are on the market these days in comparison with just three years ago. It’s astounding! So next time you’re buying dish soap or paying your electricity bill, vote with your wallet for a greener apartment, greener economy, and a greener New York!
