SUMMARY:The Heat is On: Strategies & Solutions for Helping Achieve Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:The impacts of climate change are increasingly upon us – from extreme heat to drought to fires. To continue to thrive on our planet for the long-term it is necessary to work together—governments\, companies\, civil society\, and individuals—to reduce the carbon emissions causing climate change and enable the energy transition. \nWhether due to the nature of our job\, or if we have adequate tree cover in our neighborhood\, or if we have access to safe and stable housing\, or the historical burden of pollution where we live\, each individual and community is impacted differently. How can we support environmental and climate justice? How can we work together to create more resiliency and protect the health and well-being\, as well as livelihoods of people living in vulnerable areas? This starts with understanding the systemic reasons behind these historical and ongoing inequities and then working together to address them and build equitable solutions. \nIn parallel\, as governments and companies accelerate their move away from a fossil-fuel- based energy system and towards a clean\, renewable energy system\, there is a need to foster policies that share the benefits and opportunities of the green transition. This includes access to good jobs with health and safety protections and fair wages and benefits\, as well as education and training to make the transition to new green jobs. What is already happening to secure this future\, and what more is needed? What role do we have as consumers\, investors\, and community members to help make a difference? \nJoin Domini Impact Investments for a lively discussion with Domini’s CEO and Engagement Director and NY-based not-for-profit organizations: Solar One and WE ACT for Environmental Justice to learn about the role of workers and communities in paving the way for a just and equitable transition for all. \nOpening & Closing remarks\nCarole Laible\, CEO\, Domini \nSpeakers: \nPeggy Shepard\, Co-Founder and Executive Director\, WE ACT for Environmental Justice \nSara Radelet\, Chief External Affairs Officer\, Solar One \nMichaela Ritz\, CTE Program Manager\, Solar One \nModerator: \nMary Beth Gallagher\, Director of Engagement\, Domini \nRegistration and More Info Here

SUMMARY:Solar Charger Community Showcase- Newark Resilient Solar Initiative: West Ward
DESCRIPTION:The Resilient Solar Initiative\, powered by Solar One and funded by National Oceanic and Atmospheric\nAdministration (NOAA)\, is a high school internship program in partnership with the City of Newark’s\nOffice of Sustainability. Its mission is to develop eight mobile solar chargers deployed to city-wide\ncommunity hubs for emergency preparedness. These chargers provide supplemental electricity during\nemergencies\, aiding Newark residents with medical devices and electronics. \nTo raise awareness of solar power’s importance\, the initiative hosts eight Community Engagement\nShowcase “pop-up” events. These free events educate Newark students\, families\, and businesses on\nsolar power’s role in emergency services. Events feature: \n\nEducational Activities: Engage with STEM-focused activities and learn about green\nenergy careers\, fostering positive climate action in our community.\nLive Demonstrations: Witness training demonstrations and the deployment of a\nsolar-energy powered emergency battery station\, showcasing the practical\napplications of sustainable technology.\nCultural Elements: Enjoy lively music and savor locally-sustained food for lunch\,\ncreating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.\nCommunity Engagement: Interact with first responders in workshop\ndemonstrations and sign up for additional Community Emergency Response Training\n(CERT) to enhance community preparedness.\nEnvironmental Advocacy: Explore the critical need for climate change mitigation\nand proactive protective measures\, addressing Newark’s vulnerability to severe\nweather incidents.\n\nPartner Organizations:\nCity of Newark Office of Health & Community Services\nCity of Newark Office of Emergency Management\nEssex County Office of Emergency Management\nCity of Newark Police & Fire\nNewark Science and Sustainability\nSouth Ward Environmental Alliance\nUrban League of Essex County\nIronbound Community Corporation\nGreater Newark Conservancy\nNewark Public Schools\nNewark Green Team\nDepartment of Emergency Management\nJannah on Grafton
