This program is FREE for teachers; all costs are covered by NYCPS through funding from the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS).  \nThis PL is not geared towards K-2nd grade teachers\, they are welcome to attend if interested\, but lesson plans and content will be focused on grade 3 and older students.  \nWHERE:  \nSolar One HQ and Workforce Development Center \n9-03 44th Road\, \nSuite 201 \nLong Island City\, NY\, 11101 \nWHEN:  \n8 am – 2 pm \nDid you know that buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in NYC? Reducing our energy use = climate action! \nJoin the NYCPS Office of Energy and Sustainability and Solar One for a day of standards-aligned\, hands-on activities. Explore ways to take climate action by reducing carbon emissions in schools and at home. \nYou’ll leave with a curriculum access as well as a supply list to bring climate action to life in your classroom. You will also be eligible for a free one-day classroom residency (Valued at $1\,1017). Teachers will also receive up to 5 hours of CTLE credit for attending. \nHands-On Activities: \n\nEnergy Transfers – Learn about how energy transfers with this hands-on activity. \nPower Plant Hook-up Game – Peek inside of a powerplant to learn how we turn fossil fuels into energy and what we can do to replace it. \nWatt Game – To gain a deeper understanding of how much electricity we use each day\, students play a card game where they match commonly used appliances to their average Wattage. They will learn to differentiate between Watts and Watt Hours and will explore the concept of “phantom load.”\nLight Bulb Lab – During this activity\, students compare different light bulbs to calculate the efficacy of each type. Students collect data such as color temperature\, Lumens\, Wattage\, lifespan\, and price to assess which light bulbs are most environmentally friendly and cost effective.\nEnergy Audit – Learn about the energy usage of devices in your classroom. \nSustainable Materials Mix & Match – Learn about the materials we can use for our environment. \n\nPlease note: If you have participated in our other Energy Efficiency PLs sessions\, you are welcome to attend again\, but content may be the same. \nNYCPS teachers are invited to attend this professional learning opportunity where they will be provided with the training\, curriculum\, and supplies needed to integrate hands-on\, culturally responsive climate resilience and energy efficiency activities into their coursework. Participating teachers will receive a materials toolkit for attending which consists of a classroom set of watt readers\, light bulbs\, and access to curriculum. SUMMARY:Solar for Mid-Cycle Affordable Housing: Harness the Sun's Power for Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:The time is ripe for affordable housing to go solar. With increased incentives for solar from the Inflation Reduction Act\, and the opportunity to use New York State’s strongest solar incentives to date\, many mid-cycle affordable housing projects may finally find solar within reach – bringing clean energy and electric bill savings to properties and households across the city. Join local solar and housing organizations\, Solar One and Housing Partnership\, for a presentation on how to bring cost-effective solar energy to mid-cycle affordable housing in New York City. The presentation will include a brief primer on solar for multifamily buildings\, an overview of available incentives and financing options\, and helpful strategies when moving forward with a solar project on your mid-cycle buildings. \nModerated by: Chris Widelo\, NYSAFAH \nPresenters:\n– Anika Wistar-Jones\, Solar One\n– Kate Selden\, Solar One\n– Esther Toporovsky\, Housing Partnership\n– Jared Lang\, HPDC Energy
