Education Program Outlines
Solar One offers enrichment programs to K-12 Schools in all 5 boroughs of New York City. The programs concentrate on 4 main focal areas: Renewable Energy, Sustainable Design, Estuary Ecology and Environmental Art. (Education Brochure)
These programs offer anywhere from 1-3 sessions that last approximately 1-1.5 hours each, and are offered both in school and on site at Solar One. To sign up for one of these programs, please fill out the Pre-Visit Form and email to education [at] solar1.org at least 3 weeks in advance.
About the Program
The Renewable Energy course will teach students about the science of electricity while emphasizing the ecological consequences of conventional energy production and consumption. Through hands-on design lab activities, students will learn about renewable power, including solar, wind, and bio-diesel. This course will encourage students to formulate an appreciation of science and engineering and to encourage their further exploration of these disciplines with respect to environmental issues. About the Program
Using the Solar One facility as a starting point, our Sustainable Design course will familiarize students with concepts related to architecture, community planning, and product design. In addition to conveying information about green building components and LEED certification, our Educators will lead neighborhood walks, introduce students to environmental and community mapping practices, and conduct design lab sessions. Students will explore the environmental consequences and benefits of design on all scales and how it affects the environment and our health. This program will encourage students to address real-world issues through innovative design solutions. More Info

About the Program
The Estuary and Native Plants course will provide opportunities for urban students to explore natural spaces in and around Stuyvesant Cove Park and the East River tidal strait. It will encourage students to experience the park and estuary as fascinating and complex living ecosystems. Students will learn about the science and history of Stuyvesant Cove Park and the East River while participating in water quality testing and analysis, native plant studies, wildlife observations, oyster gardening, and composting, among other activities. The program will help students to better understand and connect with our local ecosystems and to encourage their stewardship of our natural resources. More Info

About the Program
Solar One’s course on Ecological Art will introduce students to the rich history of the field through presentations that highlight the projects and techniques of eco-artists in New York City and throughout the world. It will also provide a context for them to create their own drawings, sculptures, installations and designs. The program will initiate discussions about issues of urban ecology and how to use the expressive qualities of art to help restore local ecosystems and communities. More Info
