Paloma McGregor

As a former journalist, Paloma McGregorês choreography often explores the intersection of dance and text. A collaborator by nature and practice, she has created dances with artists in a range of disciplines, including four-time National Slam Poetry champion Patricia Smith, who wrote the poem that accompanies her newest work, “34 Prayers Before Passing.” This ensemble work captures the emotional devastation of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It is an elegy to a culture tied to the life, breath and resilience of its people. The piece evokes images of prayer and struggle, wrote the Washington Post, “poignantly suggesting that despite their anger and disillusionment, some people never lost their faith or hope for survival.” In addition to creating her own work, Paloma is a dancer with Urban Bush Women and teaches workshops on merging dance and text.

Emily Harper Dance

Emily Harper Dance is dedicated to the creation of dances that explore various types of human behavior through personal interactions. We present the audience with work that is emotionally engaging and intense, and welcome viewers into enchanted, dark and textured worlds the dancers create with both intimately beautiful and physical fresh movement.

Choreographer Emily Harper approaches each dance as an opportunity to create an idiosyncratic world with her dancers. She uses her artist’s diverse kinetics and strengths and pushes them into finding genuine sensation based movement. Harper approaches each dance as a collaboration with her artists, giving them imagery and tasks to investigate that they explore alone and with one another. The collaborative process allows the unearthing of honest movement.

Our mission is to create dances that push the audience through visual journeys and not only invite them to become aware of all their perceptive senses, but ask them to question or grapple with the world around them.
