Introd To Green

Your building wants to go green, but where do you start? Intro to Green workshops break down costs vs. savings, government and utility incentives, new green laws and codes, and ways to engage building residents and staff.

Intro to Green is currently offered in two versions: Intro to Green for Building Operators, presented in partnership with the Superintendents Technical Association, and Intro to Green for Coops & Condos, presented in partnership with the Council of New York Cooperatives & Condos. Please see below for details and upcoming workshops.

for Building Operators

This introductory course will help building operators manage their buildings in a more energy efficient and cost effective way. The three-hour course will orient building operators to green terminology and concepts; inform superintendents about NYC’s new green laws for existing buildings; discuss NYSERDA incentives available for New York buildings; and determine if future education and/or certifications may be right for the attendees.

This two-hour workshop, sponsored by CNYC, NYSERDA Energy $mart Communities, and Solar One, will present easy ways to reduce energy costs and have a healthier, greener building; details on the new NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program for comprehensive energy efficiency retrofits; an overview of new green laws and code changes; and strategies for engaging owners in the greening process.

Intro to Green Topics

Building Science Basics:

This course covers concepts based on the idea that your building is created by a collection of systems. Understanding how all the systems and sub-systems within your building work and interact with each other is known as Building Science. Topics covered within this section include: Building Envelope, The Stack Effect, heating and cooling efficiently, and more.

Energy Efficiency:

One of the major consumers of energy in buildings is electricity. Because of it’s prevalence, it is one of the greatest opportunities for savings. This course will review common problems and solutions to reduce energy waste.

Water Conservation:

New York City buildings have seen double-digit percentage increases in their water rates in the last few years. Rainwater and everyday wastewater from NYC building are combined in our sewer systems, which make overflowing in the Hudson, East River, and the Atlantic Ocean and flooding on our city streets and basements, more likely. Economic costs and environmental factors are two great reasons to educate yourself and your residents about water conservation.

Indoor Air Quality:

While Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is about the air inside our buildings, factors both inside and outside our buildings effect the cleanliness of the air we breathe. From paint fumes down to running sneakers, there is a lot that can be done to improve the quality of the air we breathe inside our buildings. Green Cleaning basics are also introduced.

Waste & Recycling:

Trash piles up quickly, but all of it doesn’t have to be trucked off to landfills in Pennsylvania and Ohio (where NYC’s trash currently goes). About 1/3 of NYC’s trash is recyclable. This course will review New York City’s Recycling Laws and available resources, provide ideas to educate your tenants, and also provide third party partners who are available to help you and your tenants expand your recycling behaviors, thereby reducing the amount of waste leaving your building.

New York City’s Green Building Laws:

Updates to the New York City Building Code will make both old and new buildings more efficient and healthy, and help make the city a greener place overall. New laws will be covered and updates to older laws will be reviewed regarding: NYC Green Building Codes; Greener, Greater Buildings Plan; and Heating Oil Laws.
Green Programs for Buildings & Supers:

Green Programs for Buildings & Supers:

Green incentive programs for buildings will be reviewed. Additionally, a list of resources for supplemental training programs available for NYC’s superintendents will be shared with attendees, as well as suggestions for how to improve your green communication with building owners and tenants.

Advanced Green Measures:

After a building has been determined as energy efficient as it is possible, advanced measures such as photovoltaics, solar thermal heating and green roofs may be considered. These and other advanced green measures will be introduced in the course.
