SlowLab

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Feeling a bit frenetic in the city? Well then slow down, with NYC’s slowlab:

SlowLab is an emerging organization based in New York City and with activities worldwide.

The mission of the organization is to promote ’slowness’ as a positive catalyst of individual, socio-cultural and environmental well-being, engaging the innate creative capacities of individuals and leveraging the collaborative potential of communities to spur networks of cooperation that incite new thinking and approaches.

To achieve this, slowLab has initiated and is growing a network of creative, civic-minded individuals from all areas of the general public to exchange ideas and resources, share knowledge and cooperatively develop projects that positively impact the lives of individuals, the communities they participate in and the planet that we share.

slowLab’s current and future programs include public lectures, discussions and exhibitions, a dynamic online project observatory and communication portal, academic programs and publishing projects. Our objective is to reach a wide spectrum of disciplines and communities, enabling slowLab’s more holistic approach to take root and grow among the national and international public.

Schools pursue L.E.E.D.

green school in bklyn

The US Green Building Council has special guidelines for education buildings to help schools improve productivity and health by greening their buildings. The Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx and the Poly Prep Lower School in Brooklyn are both registered schools.

The average school using L.E.E.D. (leadership in energy and environmental design) principles will save $100,000 per year in direct savings. But the issue is much bigger than that, because students are susceptible to environment related illnesses like asthma which contribute to absences from school, heath care costs, and growing evidences suggests decreased academic performance. The South Bronx has some of the worst air in the country and its students are paying the price.

Encourage your school to go green! Students, teachers, administrators, and support staff all benefit from a healthier work place and lower costs. Visit buildgreenschools.org for more info on the web. Want to learn about it at Solar One? Visit Solar One’s education page for info about our programs.

Garden for the Environment

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

If you are feeling out of sorts about environmental issues, maybe a little overwhelmed, sometimes sad, I recommend looking at this breath of fresh air. Fresh air from plants, that is. Take a look at yet another amazing FutureFarmers project, underway in California: Garden for the Environment.

The Garden for the Environment (GFE) Artist in Residency Program (AIR)
Amy Franceschini is the first artist in residence and will work for a period of 10 months to create a Victory Garden in the Urban Backyard (UB) plot. Garden for the Environment maintains a nationally acclaimed one-acre urban demonstration garden and offers environmental education programs about organic gardening, urban compost systems and sustainable food systems.

Doesn’t that help just a bit? I sure think so.
