BUILDING PERFORMANCE/WEATHERIZATION CLASS AND LAB INSTRUCTOR
Job Description: Solar One, an award-winning environmental education, energy advocacy and green career job training organization in New York City, seeks part time instructors for our Building Performance and Weatherization courses. Soon to be a Building Performance Institute (BPI) affiliated training organization, this course prepares workers for entry level air sealing and insulation crew work (aka “retrofitting and/or weatherization”) based on expected (but not yet released) standards for the BPI field site “Installer” certificate exam in air sealing and insulation from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). The course also introduces students to the concept and practice of energy efficiency, including methods for assessing the energy use of new and existing buildings and techniques for retrofitting buildings to increase efficiency, to include: the role of energy efficiency in mitigating climate change and lowering energy costs; overview of BPI, NYSERDA, WAP agencies and private contractors in weatherization field; basic building science and a “whole system” approach to assessing energy usage in buildings; applying best practices in health and safety to buildings and working conditions; experience with common air sealing and insulation materials; and using “blower door” technology to gauge air flow in residential housing. Solar One part time instructors report to the Solar One Training Director and collaborate closely with Solar One Green Job Training Program and Career Development Directors.
Candidate Qualifications: Candidates must hold one or more industry recognized Building Performance certifications (BPI Building Analyst, HERS Rater, LEED AP, etc.), and have a general background in the building trades including basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, green building maintenance and building science. Candidates must also possess a strong desire to work with unemployed and underemployed low and moderate income adults residing in environmental justice areas in New York City; be committed to a “green for all” mission; have group facilitation and/or prior teaching experience; and energy efficiency and weatherization work experience. Prior field experience with a WAP agency or NYSERDA approved contractor highly desirable.
