Meet Jordan Aponte, Stuyvesant Cove Park’s new Gardener
Tuesday, May 31st, 2011Solar One is pleased to welcome Jordan Aponte as the newest addition to the team. A graduate of the Million Trees NYC Training Program, Jordan followed MillionTreesNYC’s Ecological Restoration track, landing in the perfect spot – Stuyvesant Cove Park. The MillionTreesNYC Training Program, a collaboration between the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation and The New York Restoration Project, is a comprehensive green-collar job training for young adults, and perfect preparation for Jordan’s new position as Gardener at Solar One’s sustainably-managed Park.

Growing up in the Bronx, Jordan began working in horticulture at Sustainable South Bronx, through their Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training for Ecology. He first learned about native and invasive species at the Million Trees training program, and is excited to learn more about all the different kinds of native plants at Stuyvesant Cove Park. He has already begun working with high school interns in the park, and participated in our first Family Day on May 14. Solar One and the Park’s team are thrilled to have him on board and we look forward to enjoying his excellent people and gardening skills through the summer.

Green Design Lab In The News & Applications for 2011-12
Thursday, May 26th, 2011Solar One’s Green Design Lab program has been going strong this school year as we have delivered the program to 10 schools across New York City. The program teaches students about energy and sustainability through a variety of lessons and activities using their own school to demonstrate how buildings and their occupants use resources. Students then take these lessons and apply them to greening projects that reduce consumption by bringing together teachers, students, administrators, janitorial staff and parents to effect changes.
Last week, the program got some nice coverage from the Manhattan Times – a bilingual newspaper serving Inwood and Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. The article focuses on our work with PS 187 in Washington Heights where Solar One educators have been helping students save energy as part of the Green Cup Challenge and create the beginnings of a rooftop garden to reduce cooling costs for the building.
The program has been a rousing success and we are thankful to see such a warm write-up of the program and its accomplishments. We are already gearing up to implement the program in more schools during 2011-12. If you are interested in bringing the program to your or your children’s school next year, you can download the application from the Green Design Lab site, or click here to download it in PDF or MSWord format.

Help Us Light Up Times Square in Support of the New York Solar Jobs Act!
Wednesday, May 25th, 2011State lawmakers are considering new legislation -the New York Solar Jobs Act- that would increase solar power installations in New York 90 fold over the next 15 years, creating 22,000 jobs and $20 billion of economic activity. Our neighbors across the Hudson implemented similar legislation years ago, which has made New Jersey the number two state for solar (after California) with five times as much solar installed as NY.
Show Albany that New York is serious about solar: Submit a photo that shows your support for solar power and two winners will have their photos displayed for 1.5 millions people a day on the CBS Superscreen in Times Square. For full instructions and rules, visit our friends at Vote Solar.
To learn how the legislation works, watch our two-and-a-half minute video:
