Solar 2 Secures Nearly $1.1M in New Funding
Thursday, April 28th, 2011As spring kicks into high gear, we are happy to report that the Solar 2 campaign is also gaining some significant momentum. We got some coverage from DNAinfo and Inhabitat back in February. Now this week we have been notified of two new grants that move us closer to breaking ground on our groundbreaking project.
The first grant comes from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) through their Green Innovation Grant Program (GIGP). The EFC is a public benefit corporation providing low-cost capital and expert technical assistance for environmental projects in New York State while promoting innovative environmental technologies. The GIGP program is a competitive process that contributes “seed money for projects which spur green innovation, build green capacity, and facilitate technology transfer throughout the State.”

Support Solar Power in NY!
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011This week is a watershed for solar power in New York as the legislature debates the New York Solar Industry and Development Jobs Act of 2011 (S.4178 & A.5713). The NY Solar Jobs Act, if passed, would increase New York’s solar capacity to 500 megawatts over 15 years (a 90 fold increase), eliminate 120 million tons of carbon pollution, and create an estimated 22,000 jobs while generating more than $20 billion in economic activity.
You can learn more about the NY Solar Industry and Development Jobs Act by watching our video (click here or see below), or by reading this summary of the legislation. Find ways to take action in support of the bill by visiting our friends at the Natural Resources Defense Council and Vote Solar.

Powershift 2011
Thursday, April 21st, 2011This April I traveled down to Washington D.C. for a three day convention called Power Shift. This convention organizes and empowers people from all over the country to fight for a clean and safe energy future! This year I had the pleasure of being a part of the 10,000 mostly young Americans who came to work on moving our country towards a sustainable future. The conference featured speakers such as Al Gore, Van Jones and Bill McKibben who were inspiring and encouraged all the participants to continue fighting towards the beliefs that brought us together.
It was enlightening to hear stories from all over the country about how damaging dirty energy can be. Speaking with people who have had the environment in their county destroyed by mountain top removal coal mining, or with those fighting for clean air and water against the hydrofracking natural gas industry, made me realize that, more than ever, it is essential for the leadership in our city to do the right thing and combat climate change. There are many easy things that every New Yorker can do to get involved and make a difference.
Check out wearepowershift.org to get ideas and hear stories from the convention.
Do your part! Keep an eye out for Solar 1′s events as well as all of our partners. You can meet and greet with tons of like minded people through out the city at these events and learn how you can become a greener New Yorker
