RAIN OR SHINE! StoveTec Teach-In and Cook Out: Pro-Poor Innovations in Clean, Efficient Cooking + Hot Dogs. With Ben West, Aprovecho Research Center.//

7:00 pmto8:30 pm

Each year 1.6 million people – 85% of which are women and children – die from inhaling the smoke emitted by open fires or unimproved cook stoves. At the same time, traditional practices of collecting biomass fuels for cooking – carried out almost universally by women- is a time-consuming task that displaces education and other opportunities for empowerment, and, in the long-term, frequently contributes to unsustainable levels of deforestation and erosion.

StoveTec is an award-winning, high efficiency cookstove that reduces harmful emissions by 70%, while increasing fuel-efficiency by 50%. The design was created by the Oregon-based Aprovecho Research Center (ARC), and over 70,000 stoves have been shipped internationally over the past two years to countries including India, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, Chile, Argentina, the Marshall Islands, and Haiti.

Join us for an evening presentation on StoveTec’s design, goals and impacts by project manager Ben West.

Following the discussion, the stoves will be put to immediate good use: grilling hot dogs and veggie dogs on the Solar One stage, over beer and other refreshments.

WFMU at the High Line (solar-powered live radio)

Friday, May 28th, 2010
May 31, 2010
7:00 pmto10:00 pm

Last spring and summer Solar One teamed up with WFMU’s DJ Trent Wolbe to produce a series of solar-powered radio broadcasts for the station’s “Sound and Safe” program on Monday nights. Solar One’s original photovoltaic charging units, designed by S1 BFF Elliot Montgomery provided the juice for both transmission and live amplification.

Our 2010 season begins next Monday when DJ/Rupture, DJ Trent, Solar One and Friends of the High Line team up next Monday, May 31st from 7-10pm to bring you a broadcast from The High Line, the most beautiful public space in New York.

Featuring a live set of interstellar 8-bit crunk by Minusbaby + live stargazing (with telescopes!) by the Amateur Astronomers’ Association. Join the fun in person – for free! – on the High Line under the Standard Hotel between 12th and 13th Streets (map).

Solar One brings former Ontario Minister of Energy to Albany to address legislators about the province’s new renewable energy Feed-In Tariff policy

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

On Tuesday afternoon Solar One organized a special presentation at the NYS legislative office building in Albany by George Smitherman, Ontario’s former Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, on the subject of the province’s new Green Energy Act (GEA).

The GEA comprises a number of separate policies that collectively aim to support and expand economic investment in clean and renewable sources of energy for the purpose of building a stronger economy, combating climate change and ensuring a healthier future for generations to come. The province has estimated that the act will generate 50,000 direct and indirect jobs over the next three years, while establishing Ontario as a leading global destination for clean energy investment. The GEA also makes Ontario the first government in North America to legislate the phased elimination of all domestic coal-based generation (by the end of 2014).

Many of the GEA’s market support objectives for renewable energy will be accomplished via the province’s newly implemented feed-in tariff (aka Renewable Energy Payment) program. The FIT approach enables clean power producers using different technologies to sell the power that they generate in long-term contracts at differentiated rates that ensure fair and predictable returns. Now implemented in over 50 countries worldwide, the feed-in tariff approach has been responsible for the majority of global clean energy development over the past decade.

As New York continues to debate the future shape of its long-term renewable energy strategy, Mr. Smitherman’s visit created a powerful opportunity for legislators to learn and ask questions about our regional neighbor’s ambitious approach directly from an individual who was central to its realization.
