Village Solar starts SociaLite project at Cooper Union
Sunday, April 18th, 2010Two Fridays ago the Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School’s Village Solar team started working with the SociaLite lantern project at the Cooper Union. SociaLite is the name of a durable, low-cost solar-powered lantern designed for use by rural, unelectrified populations. Launched four years ago, the project continues to evolve from the hardwork and creativity of students, faculty and recent alumni of Cooper Union’s school of engineering.
Each Village Solar student will complete their own lantern over the four week collaboration at Cooper Union – that includes full circuit board construction and lantern housing fabrication.
The lanterns will ultimately be powered by small solar charging units that the students will assemble at the conclusion of the course. The units will be modeled after systems that are typical of rural solar applications and will be powered by photovoltaic modules that the students constructed during the first two weeks of the project (view video here).
This video contains scenes from the group’s first two weeks at Cooper, during which they received a crash course in electronics, circuitry and soldering before jumping right into construction of their boards.
