Brooklyn Bridge March for Climate Leadership

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
October 24, 2009
12:00 pmto1:00 pm

brooklyn-bridge-1

Solar One is participating in a local action planned by Greenpeace and 350 – a march across the Brooklyn Bridge on October calling on world leaders to take bold action for the climate.  We will march from Manhattan to Brooklyn and take an amazing group photo with the NYC skyline in the background.  We need you to join us to make the powerful statement that New Yorkers want strong climate action.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Meet at 12:00 (noon) on October 24 at the Manhattan entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge

There is an open plaza area across from this entrance to the bridge – between the City Hall (4,5,6) and the Chambers St. – Brooklyn Bridge (J,M,Z) stations.

You’ll see us in bright red stop global warming shirts, which you will get upon arriving to the event.

This is a rain or shine event, be on time!

Please let us know you are coming by RSVPing here.

WHY PARTICIPATE

Many members of the Solar One community remember the Sea of People action that we organized back in 2007 in Battery Park. It was one of several hundred events held throughout the country on the same day as part of  Step It Up – a grassroots campaign to intensify public focus on the goal of preventing catastrophic climate change. We called for congress and the White House to step it up and support the goal of reducing curb carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. With 3000+ people participating, it was the largest climate change rally ever held in the United States to date. Before that day of action “80% by 2050″ was an obscure set of numbers with no political currency. After Step It Up, the goal became a broadly accepted aspiration in subsequently introduced legislation, and a common reference point for policymakers in Washington.

Much has changed in the last two years politically, and today the opportunity to establish meaningful and binding carbon reduction programs, both domestically and internationally, has never been greater. The Senate will shortly debate ‘cap-and-trade’ legislation, and international deliberations to reach an international carbon reduction treaty are already in progress and will culminate in Copenhagen in December.

However, success in both instances will only occur if people find powerful ways to demonstrate their unequivocal support for such agreements. If the public does not express its support then we will, at best, wind up with watered-down policies that do not seriously address the problem of climate change.

Don’t let that happen – BE HEARD! On October 24th join thousands of other New Yorkers and express your support for carbon reduction goals that actually mean something.

Make Solar Sonic! – a gadget building workshop.

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
November 7, 2009
1:00 pmto5:30 pm

We held this workshop last month with our good friend Phillip Stearns, and everyone who showed up had an awesome experience. News of our good times spread fast and we’ve been receiving a ton of calls from people inquiring when the next one will be scheduled. So, by popular demand, Make Solar Sonic returns!

When: Saturday, November 7th, 1pm-4:30pm.

Where: Solar One, East 23rd Street and the East River, just south of the Gulf gas station. Map and Directions.

Workshop Cost: $40 (includes all parts and materials)

Make Solar Sonic is a hands-on design workshop where students will learn basic electronic skills and concepts by constructing a wacky sound generator powered by small solar panels! In addition to walking away with their very own device, students will also gain some the fundamentals of electronic tinkering – soldering, component identification, schematic reading and wiring – that allow for future gadget making fun.

No prior experience necessary. Participants must be at least 13 years old.

Instructor: Phillip Stearns

Contact: Chris Neidl, neidl@solar1.org, 212 505 6050

Register Online (required)
Online donation system by ClickandPledge

Workshop limited to 15 participants – so register now!
