Synopsis
It is now all the rage in the Age of Al Gore and Obama, but can you remember when everyone in America was not “Going Green”? Visually stunning, vastly entertaining and awe-inspiring, Earth Days looks back to the dawn and development of the modern environmental movement— from its post-war rustlings in the 1950s and the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s incendiary bestseller Silent Spring, to the first wildly successful 1970 Earth Day celebration and the subsequent firestorm of political action.
Earth Days’ secret weapon is a one-two punch of personal testimony and rare archival media. The extraordinary stories of the era’s pioneers—among them Former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall; biologist/ Population Bomb author Paul Ehrlich; Whole Earth Catalog founder Stewart Brand; Apollo Nine astronaut Rusty Schweickart; and renewable energy pioneer Hunter Lovins—are beautifully illustrated with an incredible array of footage from candy-colored Eisenhower-era tableau to classic tear-jerking 1970s anti-litterbug PSAs. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Robert Stone (Oswald’s Ghost, Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst) Earth Days is both a poetic meditation on humanity’s complex relationship with nature and an engaging history of the revolutionary achievements—and missed opportunities—of ground-breaking eco-activism.
Earth Days opens at The Quad Cinema, 34 West 13th Street on August 14th.

Labor Secretary Smith holds press conference at Solar One to announce June job stats.
Friday, July 17th, 2009On Thursday morning, July 16th, Solar One hosted a press conference convened by New York State Commissioner of Labor, M. Patricia Smith. The commissioner announced that the state experienced significant additional job losses in the month of June, an indication that New York’s economic health has now declined to levels on par with the national average. In contrast to these gloomy numbers, Commissioner Smith took time to acknowledge the success and future potential of Solar One and partner STRIVE‘s growing green collar job training programs, and the organizations’ new partnership, that will expand training in multiple tracks to thousands of New Yorkers living in chronically under-employed communities beginning this fall. Solar One Executive Director Chris Collins also addressed the conference to discuss the importance of the green collar economy for New York’s future prosperity.

Friday, July 17th, 2009
On Sunday, August 2, 2009, Asian Americans for Equality will hold its annual Chinatown Summer Street Festival, which attracts approximately 20,000 visitors. Asian Americans for Equality, Inc. (AAFE) is a community-based, not-for-profit organization established in 1974 that is committed to community service and the empowerment of immigrants, low-income families, and minorities throughout New York City.
Under the theme of “Building Green and Healthy Communities,” the 18th annual 2009 Chinatown Summer Street Festival will highlight the many initiatives and programs currently available to keep our environment clean, safe, healthy and sustainable. Other activities include a composting workshop, a recycling information table, an electronics recycling collection, and marketing of CFL’s and other energy saving products.
