A Busy Monday at Solar One

Monday the 18th was a busy day (and night) at Solar One. The morning began with a special presentation by U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner (9th District) concerning the American Clean Energy and Security Act – the potentially historic cap and trade legislation that began markup in the House Energy and Commerce Committee today. The legislation would create a long term program to limit carbon emissions of major polluters. Representative Weiner, a supporter of the bill, addressed a group of about thirty New Yorkers in the Solar One building at 11am and fielded questions, comments and feedback before flying down to Washington to participate in the week long process of debating and altering the legislation before a committee vote. The 90 minute event was covered by NY1.

Later on in the evening, the Green Renter hosted a panel discussion about the controversial plan to exploit the enormous Marcellus Shale natural gas reserve that reaches into the watershed area that provides the majority of New York City’s drinking water. The method of drilling to be deployed, known as hydro fracturing (or ‘fracking’) raises serious public health and enironmental concerns because it has resulted in substantial degradation in a number of the areas where it has been deployed perviously. Molly Gandour, the producer of the soon to be completed documentary on the subject, Water Under Attack, was joined by advocate Jay Simpson of Riverkeeper and attorney Deborah Goldberg of Earthjustice.

Between 8pm and 11pm we are pretty sure that we made history when we powered a live broadcast of WFMU 91.1′s radio show ‘Sound and Safe‘ from our newly built Mobile Solar Charging Unit. The unit was the joint idea of Solar One staff and Trent Wolbe, the show’s host and regular Solar One DJ, and was designed by longtime Solar One collaborator and friend Elliott Montgomery and engineer Dustyn Roberts. The project also could not have been realized without the critical technical assistance and consultation of AltPOWER’s David Gibbs and Marc Perez. The Unit will be used weekly as an outreach tool for Solar One’s I Heart PV campaign and on one Monday per month it will serve as the power source for ‘Sound and Safe’.
