Photographer and sculptor Fred George has built a reputation for delivering powerful, timely political messages through his diverse creative practice. Mr. George’s more notable works include the iconic 9/11 portrait ‘Ash Wednesday‘, and ‘AK-47 Sculpture’, a 3-meter tall crucifix assembled with machine guns. However, the artist’s latest project may ultimately be his most provactive and ambitious: Solar Powered Peace Sculpture will be a 34-foot tall peace symbol constructed from 120 steel oil barrels affixed with the same number of fully functioning solar panels. Current plans will aim to install two identical versions of the work in Saarbrucken, Germany and New York City during the summer of 2008. Solar One’s home of Stuyvesant Cove Park is currently considered the leading potential venue for the work.
